Coco Palms, Singapore
Dichroic Glass integrated in a palm leaf sculpture by Florence Ng
Florence, founder and glass artist, was commissioned to create a sculpture for Coco Palms, a new condominium development in Pasir Ris. Following the theme of the development, where Palm trees abound, the sculpture took the form of a large palm leaf that appears to have descended gently onto a reflecting pond, elegantly poised in all its iridescent glory.
Once the concept and design was finalised, the team proceeded to prepare models, mockups and elevation drawings, to finally fabrication of the steel frame and glass 'fins'. As the form of the sculpture was 'twisted' and 'bent', modifications to the shape had to be made continuously as the frame was being built, using the 'eyeball' of the artistic team.
It is the first time that dichroic glass is integrated in such a manner, and the effects are stunning; as residents and visitors drive through the entrance, the sculpture 'changes' with every angle in form and colour, and even in the day and night.
