About the Project
The installation extends along both sides of the train platform, comprising 24 UV-printed glass panels, each approximately 3.8 metres high by 1 metre wide. Abstract in nature yet continuous in composition, the design draws from the fluidity and layered distortions of water reflections, where shifting colours and textures merge into rhythmic movement.
Each image was digitally painted and realised through UV printing on laminated, tempered glass with PVB interlayers, ensuring both clarity and durability. Accents of gold and silver leaf introduce subtle reflective highlights, echoing the shimmer of light on water and creating a visual dialogue with Han Sai Por’s polished metal sculptures elsewhere in the station.
Internally backlit, the panels transform under light, radiating depth and colour within the tall, softly illuminated station space. When viewed from the platform below, Water Reflections presents a panoramic field of light, serene, immersive, and quietly dynamic.
Concept
Cantonment sits at the confluence of past and present, once a gateway of trade and travel, and now a link within Singapore’s Circle Line. Inspired by this idea of exchange and connection, the artwork expresses flow, movement, and interconnectedness, echoing the continuous circulation of energy through the area.
Originally envisioned as a vertical composition, the design was reinterpreted in a horizontal format to create a seamless flow across the panels. This orientation also allows the artwork to visually align with Han Sai Por’s sculptural forms, ensuring a cohesive visual language that connects the art elements within the station and maintains a harmonious spatial rhythm.
Comprising 24 backlit panels, twelve on each side of the train platform, the work forms a luminous tableau that unfolds along the length of the space. Seen from below, it evokes the sensation of looking through stained-glass windows or gazing out across the rippling surface of a lake. The interplay of light and layered reflections creates a sense of motion and depth, drawing viewers into a quiet moment of contemplation amid the flow of daily transit.
Through its dialogue of light, colour, and form, Water Reflections transforms the platform into a place of passage and pause, a quiet reminder that every journey, like water, finds its way forward.
