Deborah, founder of local art studio Talking Textiles, pays homage to multicultural prints, traditional architecture and other elements unique to the island of Singapore in a range of designs that evoke the old world glamour of local landmarks like the iconic Raffles Hotel. Deborah, founder of local art studio Talking Textiles, pays homage to multicultural prints, traditional architecture and other elements unique to the island of Singapore in a range of designs that evoke the old world glamour of local landmarks like the iconic Raffles Hotel. The SynerG x Talking Textiles Collection features six distinct designs that incorporate cultural motifs such as Chinese silks and Indian sari’s interpreted through the lens of Deborah’s South African roots. This exclusive collection is part of SynerG’s partnership with local artists to bring art into everyday spaces, especially in homes, where any plain glass area can be transformed into a canvas for personal expression and functional areas double as design features in space-scarce apartments. This is also where form meets function, with the glass backsplash's strength and its heat- and grime-resistant properties making it easy to clean, while its modern, sophisticated aesthetic transforms the look and feel of a standard kitchen. Most designs are also available in a range of soothing, pastel colours that are on trend and would add a touch of sophistication to any home. About the Designs 1. Traveller’s Palm The Traveller's Palm design was inspired by the lush plants that surround the Raffles Hotel. The growing branches of this fan-shaped palm is said to “travel” depending on the direction of the sun, with each new branch turning either toward or away from the sun, hence its name. 2. Long Bar Fan The Long Bar Fan design was inspired by the ceiling fans found at the Raffles Hotel's famous Long Bar. 3. Bamboo The Bamboo design is reminiscent of Chinese ink paintings. 4. Sari Wave This design was inspired by the motifs used in sari fabric. 5. Dotted Wave The dotted wave design was inspired by the inky dots used in some batik designs. 6. Singapore Treasures The most artistic design of the lot, the Singapore Treasures backsplash features elements that hark back to the Straits Settlements, a group of British territories in Southeast Asia. Singapore became part of the Straits Settlements in 1826, before it was named a Crown colony in 1867. Singapore grew exponentially during this time, establishing itself as an important trading post and welcoming an influx of immigrants from all over the world seeking a brighter future. The Straits Settlements stamp in this artwork is based on an actual postage stamp in circulation from 1937 to 1941. Featuring King George VI, this is the last stamp series of the Straits Settlements. The abstract blue, watery splashes of ink in the backsplash design evoke the sea and the surrounding waters, which made Singapore flourish as an island entrepôt in the early days. The story of European explorers arriving on the tropical island of Singapore with all its beautiful flora and fauna is expressed through this artwork. Since graduating from the Singapore Management University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management six years ago, she has joined her mother, veteran Singaporean glass artist Ms Florence Ng, at the company to run and chart new courses for the business. Like her mother, Sara is passionate about finding synergies between art, design and function in the versatile medium of glass and with other materials, as well as making glass in its myriad applications more accessible to all. With Sara at the helm, Synergraphic Design has since launched SynerG, a curated range of glass panel solutions for the gamut of interior needs, from residential spaces to commercial and office developments. As an undergraduate at SMU, Sara's passion for engaging audiences through art saw her spearhead a visual arts exhibition that brought art to the students' doorstep by installing works in the everyday spaces of the campus. An accomplished artist in her own right, having helmed exhibitions of her own artworks previously, Sara also has the distinction of being the youngest member of the Design Business Chamber Singapore's Executive Committee at the age of 29. Having exhibited in Singapore, Australia and South Africa, Deborah continues to be inspired by Singapore's exotic and bustling city with its juxtaposition of old and new. My goal by launching ArtéGlas is to make the beauty of this glass art accessible to all living spaces, even just through a plate centrepiece, a sculpture or a lighting piece.” The first batch of furnishings launched by ArtéGlas this November includes partitions and glassboards while pioneer décor collections include accessories, candle holders, vases, mirrors and lightings. Wall art and sculptures are also now available, as well as dining ware such as plates, bowls and serving dishes. ArtéGlas is also releasing their Christmas Collection named Yuletide Charms this month, which comprises perfect glass art designs for the holiday season. “All our products offer fine craftmanship and versatility to deliver both function and beauty. They are not mass-produced but are intricately handmade. Our product portfolio is a showcase of Synergraphic’s production capabilities together with our love for art,” Sara said. Sara also specified three major services that ArtéGlas extends. “Besides launching our products online through our e-commerce platform, we also offer 3 major services under ArtéGlas. Bespoke Options at ArtéGlas Branded commercial pieces sometimes do not meet specific owners’ requirements, such as the size and colour. The owners expressed a love for blown glass art by Chihuly and in particular loved the bright red, orange and yellow hues and wanted these for their home. Our team was then commissioned to exercise our artistic discretion to produce a sculptural art lighting that came together like a beautiful glass flower bouquet,” shared Sara. “Our workshop fabricated a metal structure to provide the main form, and we then added on the flowers and glass elements one by one. The result was a stunning masterpiece that truly reflected the homeowners’ tastes; a real art investment piece for the home,” she added. LamiArt on Spotlight Along with the launch of ArtéGlas is putting the spotlight on one of Synergraphic’s bestseller glass finishes, LamiArt. “Interestingly, many of the glass collections that we had offered in early 2000s are now becoming popular again. These include patterned glass and laminated art glass,” said Sara. The term, LamiArt, has been widely used in the design industry since Synergraphic launched it in 1999. “LamiArt refers to glass laminated with beautiful substrates such as Japanese rice paper, fabrics, and mesh. These substrates are sealed between two layers of glass to accentuate their textures and colors, creating a sense of depth and elegance that endures,” described Sara. LamiArt can be customised in various colours and opacities, depending on the client’s design and application requirements. Thus, it has been a go-to option for distinctive commercial interiors, including high-end hotels, restaurants and other commercial spaces. “LamiArt will also be featured and widely used across various products released through ArtéGlas. This is definitely another factor that makes ArtéGlas more exciting,” expressed Sara. It can be used to create both functional pieces and excellent work of art. Glass fusing techniques have been used since 2000BC, and was the main method of creating small glass objects for around 2000 years. It is one of the easiest techniques for beginners and today, with the addition of mixed media and many more, there are endless possibilities of what you can create with it. To start, all you have to do is to arrange the glass pieces in your desired shape or design before gluing it together with a glass fusing glue. Once dried, it can be placed in a kiln to safely fuse the pieces together. Glass can only be fused at very high temperatures, roughly between 700 to 820°C and ranges from tack fusing to full fusing. For tack fusing, it occurs at lower temperatures, where separate pieces of glass stick together but still have their own individual shapes, resulting in a piece with texture. Full fusing, on the other hand, occurs at higher temperatures and separate pieces of glass merge smoothly into one another, forming a piece with a smooth, glossy surface. In glass fusing, the thickness of the glass plays a huge role too. Too thin and it will start to contract and distort. Too thick and it will spread and flow. It is always important to choose a glass of the desired thickness, at around 6mm thick on firing. Of course, the most exciting part would be to open the kiln after firing. However, it is important to note that the kiln should only be open after it has cooled to below 52°C. This is to prevent the glass from breaking due to thermal shock from a sudden change in temperature. The art of glass fusing is filled with beauty and wonder. It is impossible to know what the end product will look like. Yet one thing is for sure, it will always turn out artistic, amazing, and personal. Want to learn more about glass fusing?
