- Loving the Glass Fusing Technique
Glass is a unique medium that is fragile, yet strong. It can be used to create both functional pieces and excellent work of art. Glass fusing techniques have been used since 2000BC, and was the main method of creating small glass objects for around 2000 years. It is one of the easiest techniques for beginners and today, with the addition of mixed media and many more, there are endless possibilities of what you can create with it. To start, all you have to do is to arrange the glass pieces in your desired shape or design before gluing it together with a glass fusing glue. Once dried, it can be placed in a kiln to safely fuse the pieces together. Glass can only be fused at very high temperatures, roughly between 700 to 820°C and ranges from tack fusing to full fusing. For tack fusing, it occurs at lower temperatures, where separate pieces of glass stick together but still have their own individual shapes, resulting in a piece with texture. Full fusing, on the other hand, occurs at higher temperatures and separate pieces of glass merge smoothly into one another, forming a piece with a smooth, glossy surface. In glass fusing, the thickness of the glass plays a huge role too. Too thin and it will start to contract and distort. Too thick and it will spread and flow. It is always important to choose a glass of the desired thickness, at around 6mm thick on firing. Of course, the most exciting part would be to open the kiln after firing. However, it is important to note that the kiln should only be open after it has cooled to below 52°C. This is to prevent the glass from breaking due to thermal shock from a sudden change in temperature. The art of glass fusing is filled with beauty and wonder. It is impossible to know what the end product will look like. Yet one thing is for sure, it will always turn out artistic, amazing, and personal. Want to learn more about glass fusing? As an artisan glass designer and maker, Synergraphic strongly supports and collaborates with artists and designers to ceaselessly challenge the boundaries of glass in different disciplines in order to discover new fluidities in the material. The artwork titled ‘This is not a code’, is designed as Functional Art, as a type of meaningful functional object (in this case a Master KeyPress Holder, or Artwork concealing a home security safe, or a bathroom cabinet), which also captures a reflective human aspect of contemporary philosophy about essential connection between language and soul. Using a variety of cold glass-working processes including bevelling, gluing, drilling of mirror and dichroic glass, Synergraphic is proud to support Ash in bringing the concept to life. Here, Synergraphic had no small part to play in contributing to the making of this luxurious environment which has captivated guests worldwide. The company made and installed the three glass mosaiclike ceiling features from which hang three enormous chandeliers at the French restaurant Les Saveurs and also created the crystal glass rosettes embedded in the stained glass panels beside the grand staircase leading up to the ballrooms and the antique mirrors of the Grand Ballroom. At Les Saveurs, diners have only to look and no doubt will be enchanted by the glory of the ceiling art, created to effect the look of stained glass using fine art glass, crystal glass flowers, and stainless steel frames. “There is something reminiscent of a cathedral here,” said Florence of the mood created. Back to All Happenings Synergraphic Design at SIDFest 2021: Optimised Optimism Photo Credit: Synergraphic Design PTE LTD (Synergraphic) recently took part in SIDFest (Singapore Interior Design Festival) 2021. Located in National Design Centre, SIDFest 2021 celebrated the theme of Optimised/Optimism and invited designers to create work using the tools of their trade. Among its aims is to celebrate the innovation and creations of the design community even through this challenging time. There, Synergraphic unveiled its latest work in collaboration with Yume Architects: Kasumi Shizuku. Kasumi, meaning distant mist and Shizuku, meaning droplets, are glass pieces inspired by natural elements. The base artwork is painted meticulously by hand and manipulated using mathematical algorithms. The end result is a beautiful piece with a unique human-machinic touch that changes under different lighting conditions. As the light shifts, the landscape changes with it. Synergrahic’s Director, Sara Ang, also presented via a virtual webinar, “Transforming Spaces with Glass & Art”. She presented valuable insights on the material of glass and its new possibilities for design, having to use it with other medium.
